IRRIGON - There will be a public meeting Thursday to discuss establishing a "Friends of the Trail" organization to support the Morrow County Columbia River Heritage Trail.

The meeting will lay out what the Friends group will do to help the continued development of the trail.

Morrow County Planning Director Carla McLane said she would like to have a core group of concerned citizens help the trail reach completion.

"We need a group of citizens willing to coalesce around this idea," McLane said. "It really needs to become a community plan."

The trail will eventually run 33 miles but only about 20 are considered "walkable." The trail is being spearheaded by the planning department, and McLane hopes a friends group will be able to take some responsibility in getting it completed.

The meeting will be held 10:30 a.m. at Columbia View Community Church in Irrigon.
