HERMISTON — Hermiston’s crime is trending downward so far this year, according to 10-year statistics released by the police department.

The first quarter crime statistics for 2013 revealed 156 total crimes in Hermiston, a 24 percent reduction from the 10-year average of 204. Hermiston’s normal range for its first few months of the year is between 180 and 228 crimes.

The reduction is largely in property crime such as burglary or larceny. At 149 reported incidents, property crimes were the lowest in the 10 years shown.

Burglaries saw the most significant decline, dropping from 41 in 2012 to 16 in 2013.

While causes vary, the reduction does correlate with the police department’s “Lock, Take and Hide” campaign.

To help prevent burglaries, auto thefts and other crime, the phrase reminds people to lock their cars, take their keys and hide their belongings.

Signs around Hermiston teach the method to residents. Police hope its implementation will reduce the opportunity for crime.
