HERMISTON —?Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus identified the victim in Monday’s deadly police shooting in Hermiston as Gregory Melvin Shafer, 55, of the Hermiston area.

Umatilla County sheriff’s detective Dave Williamson is the lead investigator on the shooting and has a few interviews to complete by Friday. After that, Primus said, he might be able to release more information, but until then he didn’t want to reveal something that could influence witnesses.

Shafer was suspected of robbing Community Bank, 50 S.E. Theater Lane, earlier in the day Monday, and was shot by Hermiston police at the Hermiston Liquor Store, 1875 N. First St., in the Fiesta Foods complex.

According to the district attorney, Shafer pointed what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun at the officers when they confronted him. Primus didn’t say what object Shafer held when police fired, but “it wasn’t a toy.”

He said he anticipates a grand jury review of the shooting next week.
