CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. - A 70-year-old former mayor of Cave Junction who sheltered homeless teens for more than two decades has been beaten to death, and one of the teens is accused.
The body of Tom Green was found Monday.
Timothy Waddell, 19, who had lived with Green during the 1990s, was charged with murder and held at the Josephine County jail, sheriff's deputies said.
Green was mayor of Cave Junction in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
"Tom took in teens like people take in stray dogs," said Cave Junction Mayor Tony Paulson, who said he was angry when he heard of Green's death. "That is not a way someone should die."
According to the sheriff's department, Waddell had two fights with Green last week, had been hearing voices and was known to use methamphetamine and marijunana.
Deputies said Waddell confronted Green on Monday and threw him to the ground, straddled his body and began banging his head on the asphalt. He was arrested after a neighbor called 9-1-1.
