UPDATED 4:12 p.m.: Interstate 84 is open between Pendleton and La Grande after the Oregon Department of Transportation closed it earlier today because of winter weather related crashes.

ODOT closed the freeway between mileposts 216 (the Arrowhead exit) and 265 (four miles east of La Grande) around noon.

The weather hazard alert is still in effect for the area and ODOT's TripCheck Web site lists the weather as "snowing hard and continuously" with packed snow on the road surface and four inches of new snow.

NOAA's winter storm warning warns of "significant snow accumulation" through Sunday in the Blue Mountains and Cascades. The warning estimates snowfall between four to eight inches in the Blues and more than a foot in the Cascades.

"Periods of snow ... heavy at times ... is expected through at least Sunday morning," the warning says.
