Residents of Imnaha, a small community northeast of Enterprise in Wallowa County, are preparing to evacuate as the Five Mile Fire burns approximately two miles south of town.

A Level 1 evacuation notice was issued Tuesday morning, meaning residents should be ready to leave as the fire approaches. The evacuation area extends five miles south of Imnaha near Freezeout Creek, and 10 miles north near Fence Creek.

In all, officials said about 100 homes are potentially threatened by the 4,000-acre wildfire. Hat Point and Upper Imnaha roads remain closed to the public.

Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team 3 is now in command of both the Five Mile and Somers fires, with limited resources available to knock down each blaze. Firefighters are working to secure structures around Imnaha, removing fuels near homes and performing burnout operations where necessary.

The Five Mile Fire is just 5 percent contained, while the Somers Fire — burning in 400 acres near Somers Point in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area — is zero percent contained.

Other fires on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest include:

CHINA CAP FIRE — Holding steady at 195 acres, and now 50 percent contained. Started by lightning. Burning in the Eagle Cap Wilderness 25 miles east of La Grande, between China Cap Ridge and the Minam River drainage.

HURRICANE CREEK FIRE — Increased in size to 1,254 acres and 50 percent contained. Started by lightning. Burning in the Eagle Cap Wilderness four miles southwest of Joseph, and remains active along the southern perimeter into Twin and Thorp creek drainages. Discussions ongoing about possible re-closure of Hurricane Creek Trail.

MOUNT IRELAND COMPLEX — Burning in the Mount Ireland and North Fork John Day Wilderness areas. Largest fire estimated between 10-15 acres. A portion of Forest Service Road 7335 is closed from the junction with Forest Road 7340. Trails from the Baldy Creek and Baldy Lake trailheads are also closed.
