A woman died Wednesday morning after a car struck her while she was jogging in Milton-Freewater.
Marrie Lisa Meza, 20, of Milton-Freewater, was jogging Wednesday at about 7 a.m. across Winesap Road between Appleton and Ferndale roads, Umatilla County Sheriff John Trumbo said, when a vehicle hit and killed her.
Speed, alcohol and drugs were not a factor, Trumbo said.
Rather, Meza was wearing headphones and listening to an IPod. Trumbo said she and may not have heard the approaching traffic.
Trumbo said the driver, 22 -year-old Hector Manual Garcia Ibarra, also of Milton-Freewater, tried to avoid Meza, but the vehicle clipped her, throwing her off the road. An ambulance took Meza to St. Mary Hospital in Walla Walla, where she died.
At this time, it does not appear Marrie Lisa Meza, is next of kin to the Meza family of Milton-Freewater that recently suffered a tragedy when 6-year-old Malani Meza died in a house fire.
Trumbo advised anyone jogging along roadways to run toward traffic, and he said they should wear brightly colored clothes or at least reflective stripes. He also said people who wear earphones while running outside should wear just one earphone. That way, he said, they still can hear traffic.
