PENDLETON - KidzTown Preschool held an open house Thursday, giving parents and children an opportunity to check out the colorful new stomping grounds.
The preschool is located at the Pendleton First Assembly of God church and offers programs for kids ages 3 to 5. Although the business is not affiliated with the church, director Star Powell said there will be some Christian teaching involved, such as the occasional Bible story.
"It truly is an educational experience and not a Sunday school," said Powell, explaining her emphasis on a phonics program. "Pre-reading skills, I think, are very important."
The preschool spaces are completely refurbished. Powell pointed out the miniature cabin room, with a cozy wooden porch, her favorite new feature.
Powell also plans an arts center where children will be able to work on whatever kind of creative projects they want.
Powell is a registered nurse, former director of children's ministries and mother of two. She recently left her job as a nurse supervisor to start up the preschool.
"I just find it really rewarding when you see the little lights go on," she said.
