HERMISTON — A Hermiston man led police in a relatively low-speed pursuit from Washington this morning, ending in handcuffs at Crest View Drive, Hermiston, said Umatilla Police Department Lt. Keith Kennedy.

Umatilla Police received an assistance call at 5:13 a.m. after Benton County, Wash., sheriff’s deputies followed into Oregon a Hummer wanted for a 4:36 a.m. Richland, Wash., hit and run, Kennedy said.

Brian Romeike, 51, of Hermiston attempted to escape police in a 2003 Hummer, according to Kennedy. Hermiston Police Department deployed spike strips at the intersection of Highway 395 and Punkin Center Road. The yellow Hummer hit the spike strips and deflated a tire. Romeike was arrested without incident, Kennedy said.

Romeike is in the Umatilla County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and attempt to elude police in a vehicle, Kennedy said.

The pursuit reached a top speed of 60 mph, police said.
