Man arrested for phony $50s

Arturo Garibay

A Hermiston man was arrested Thursday on charges that he forged dozens of counterfeit $50 bills this week.

Arturo Garibay, 25, was charged with first-degree forgery, first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and possession of methamphetamine. So far, the investigation has turned up more than $1,000 in fake money, according to the Hermiston Police Department.

Police notified local businesses after searching Garibay's home just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He was arrested earlier and taken to the Umatilla County Jail. Hermiston police Lt. Jason Edmiston said it's unclear if there are other counterfeit bills besides what has already been found.

The serial number on the counterfeits, marked as 2004 series, is GG 04318603, police said. Authorities found 21 such bills during the investigation.

Police have forwarded the case to the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.
