Man jailed on 20 counts of sex crimes

HERMISTON - Hermiston police arrested a Hermiston man Wednesday night on suspicion he sexually abused his 12-year-old male cousin.

Jason Paul Harris, 23, faces 10 counts of first-degree sexual abuse and another 10 counts of second-degree sodomy. Each fall under Oregon's Measure 11, the minimum prison sentencing law and carries a minimum prison term of six years, three months.

Umatilla County District Attorney Dean Gushwa said the arrest resulted from Child Protective Services contacting police and after a forensic interview of the victim at the Guardian Care Center in Pendleton.

Harris likely will have an arraignment this afternoon. Gushwa said his office will review the police report to file formal charges.

Harris remains in the Umatilla County Jail in Pendleton in lieu of a $1 million bond.
