The crash Monday morning near Pendleton killed a Pilot Rock man and seriously injured a Pendleton man.
Oregon State Police reported Danny D. Schademan, 48, died in the crash and Gary M. Lathrop, 44, has suffered serious injuries.
Around 5:45 Monday morning, Schademan was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound on an icy, straight stretch of Highway 395 near Milepost 9, OSP reported, when he lost control of the vehicle. Lathrop was southbound in a 1999 Mitsubishi when the Trailblazer swerved into his lane. The Mitsubishi smashed into the side of the Trailblazer.
Schademan died at the scene, OSPs news release said, and an ambulance took the seriously-injured Lathrop to St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton. Both men were wearing seat belts, OSP reported.
Sources close to the East Oregonian said Lathrop suffered multiple broken bones and organ damage. Hospital spokesman Larry Blanc said Lathrop arrived at the emergency department and now is in critical condition in the critical care unit.
OSP troopers from the Pendleton Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
