HERMISTON - To avoid the appearance of conflict of interest while she vies for the top job at the Hermiston Public Library, Marie Baldo, a once-elected city councilwoman, will be tendering her resignation tonight.
Baldo currently works as the director of the Umatilla Public Library and holds an at-large seat on the Hermiston City Council. Appointed to her first two years and elected to a full term almost four years ago, Baldo opted against filing for another term.
She said the decision to not seek re-election and to apply for the Hermiston library position were not planned, but "occurred together."
"It's time for somebody else to get this wonderful opportunity," Baldo said.
Baldo said her decision to step down "is a matter of ethics."
The city manager oversees the library director and the city council oversees the city manager.
"You can't do that," she said.
With the election just a couple months away a replacement will likely not be found, Baldo said.
Baldo indicated that she may run for office in the future, but hoped that another resident would seize the chance to serve.
"It's a great way to learn about your city, sometimes you learn too much," she laughed.
Members of the city council earn about $100 a month.
"It about covers gas," Baldo said.
Baldo, a former Umatilla Chemical Depot commander, lives in Hermiston and has been married to Fred Allen Jr. for 26 years.
