HERMISTON - The Stark family has opened a second business, the Old School Skates shop at 254 Main St.

This is a side job for Justin Stark, who also helps run the family business, Stark Bros. Construction.

"It's slow exposure," Justin said, but the family already has regular customers, such as one skater who already has gone through three boards.

"I am definitely excited," Travis Stark added.

The Starks sell many types of boards, ranging from mountain boards with hand brakes to common skateboards. In addition to decks and trucks, Old School Skates offers clothing, shoes and a skate shop.

"It's like Zumiez, but cheaper," Justin said.

Hermiston High School student and customer Devin Daubenspeck likes the store.

"It's pretty good for a starting business," he said.

Justin Stark, who grew up in Hermiston, remembers Pedaler's Place was the town's skate shop during his childhood. The owner downsized, however, and closed all but his Pendleton shop.

Stark said the family saw the need for a shop in Hermiston again, so they opened their own. He's serious about the business and says now all it needs is the community's support.

Old School Skates is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
