The Oregon Department of Transportation activated a new traffic signal in Hermiston this morning.
ODOT crews and contractors have been working for months at the intersection of Hermiston Avenue and Oregon Highway 207 (Northwest 11th Street). Construction crews reconfigured the intersection, installed curbs and sidewalks, added turn lanes, the new traffic signal, and resurfaced the pavement.
Tom Strandberg, ODOT's regional spokesman in La Grande, said the old, non-standard intersection was the site of frequent crashes and near collisions. ODOT had the reconstruction project on its needs list for several years. He said the new connection creates safer traffic patterns for motorists and pedestrians who use the route.
