PENDLETON - One-lane traffic and minor delays are expected along Westgate this week to accommodate work on the West Pendleton overpass.

The contractor will be trenching across the street to make electrical connections for lighting and traffic signals, according to Ken Eddy, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation. Flaggers will control traffic through the work area, he said.

Also this week, Weaver Construction Co. of La Grande expects to begin repairing the Ball Park Bridge over the Umatilla River. The historic structure, designed by Conde McCullough, will remain in place as a pedestrian bridge once the overpass project is finished.

Weaver Construction intends to begin setting the bridge beams over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks next Tuesday, Eddy added. On Oct. 4-5, the contractor plans to set the bridge beams that span the Umatilla River.

Using the old Ball Park Bridge as a staging area to off load the beams, a transport vehicle will park there while the cranes lift the beams off the vehicle. Eddy said Westgate would be closed during each beam-lifting operation but would reopen while the cranes set the beams.

The overpass project is scheduled to be completed next fall.
