PENDLETON - A new, taller billboard along Southeast Court Avenue was approved Thursday by the city Planning Commission.

Commissioners conducted a public hearing at which the only speaker was the applicant, John Lehman of Meadow Outdoor Advertising, The Dalles.

Lehman applied for a conditional sign permit on property owned by Bruce Mayfield at 1312 S.E. Court Ave., half a block west of St. Anthony Hospital.

Commissioners approved the new 70-square-foot sign on a 20-foot-high pole, which will replace an existing four-legged billboard of the same size that is about 11 feet high.

Lehman said a steel pole with advertising on both sides would replace an outdated, rickety wooden structure that is becoming a safety hazard.

In other business, City Planner Pete Wells told commissioners the city hopes to have a new planning director on board about March 1. Wells has been serving as both city attorney and planning director for the past several months.

Wells also said there would be no Planning Commission meeting Feb. 3 because there is no business to conduct. The commission likely meet next on Feb. 17.
