PENDLETON - Local police soon will have an unlikely new tool to fight crime - a golf cart.

Pendleton Police Department will use the cart to patrol the Pendleton River Parkway.

"We get a lot of complaints about people drinking, groups of youth congregating in certain areas and not letting the pedestrians pass ... suspicious activities or persons," said Lt. Stuart Roberts.

The department recently ordered the new cart for $5,000, and it should arrive in February or March.

The department borrowed a golf cart and used it to patrol the parkway for about three weeks.

It met with the approval of residents and was effective, Roberts said.

The cart will be better than bike patrols of the parkway because officers can take suspects into custody in it, and won't have to change uniforms to do patrols.

The cart, with an enclosed cab, also will be used year round, except for when snow and ice prevents patrols.
