HERMISTON - An Estacada man stole more than $3,500 in cash from Hermiston's Last Chance Tavern before being caught by police Tuesday morning.

Christopher Lee Devey, 25, walked into the bar just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to police. He grabbed two bank bags containing $3,581.50, then took off running. A nearby citizen chased Devey, but eventually lost sight of the man.

A short time later, Hermiston police located Devey hiding in a ditch. He had injured himself trying to escape, police said.

After a brief stay at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Devey was taken to the Umatilla County Jail charged with second-degree burglary and first-degree theft.

The stolen cash was returned to Last Chance Tavern.
