MITCHELL - Police seized more than 30 neglected farm animals Tuesday in the Mitchell area in south Wheeler County.

Oregon State Police troopers and the members of the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office served three search warrants following a month-long investigation into the neglect. An Oregon Department of Agriculture veterinarian found evidence of neglect in 30 horses and two mules, an OSP news release said. Authorities seized the animals and took them to an undisclosed location to receive proper care.

Lack of hoof care was a primary issue, as well as the animals' living conditions, the news release said.

The Wheeler County Sheriff's Office is awaiting further evaluation from the state veterinarian before deciding whether to charge the animals' owner.

The sheriff's office also is asking those who wish to donate for the care of these animals to call 866-274-9231.
