BOARDMAN - The Port of Morrow is chasing the TIGER, too.
Commissioners Wednesday approved the port's application for a $26 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation
The port would use the money to modernize the Interstate 84-U.S. Highway 730 interchange east of the port, build 5 miles of freight and industrial roadway and construct freezer and dry warehouse facilities.
The Port of Umatilla also is preparing an application for a TIGER grant. The port plans to use the money to enhance its opportunities for shipping containers to the Puget Sound.
Port of Morrow commissioners also approved a request from ZeaChem Inc. to change sites at the port. ZeaChem had leased 5 acres off Lewis &?Clark Drive, southeast of RDO Calbee's potato dough plant.
Instead, it plans to build its cellulosic ethanol test plant inside the port's rail loop, west of Pacific Ethanol.
The property is part of 34 acres Altra Biofuels leased from the port in July 2006 for a cellulosic ethanol and biofuel facility. The project never materialized.
The commission's next regular meeting will be Oct. 7.
