Lisa Schmidt is Hermistons lunch lady. It says so in the name of her new deli, The Lunch Lady.
Owning a restaurant has been on Schmidts radar for years and she finally had a chance to pursue her love of cooking. Located at 415 W. Hermiston Ave., the restaurant serves up deli-style sandwiches, homemade soups, salads and wraps as well as pies and desserts.
Schmidt opened for business Monday and since then has heard nothing but positive feedback from her customers, some of which are already regulars during the bustling lunch hour.
The Lunch Lady currently employs four people, but with the lunch rush, Schmidt is convinced she needs one more.
I thought it would take a while for word to get out, but so far it has been great, Schmidt said. Im already getting repeat customers and Ive only been in business four days.
One of her most popular menu items is the homemade soup.
I have people calling and asking, Whats your soup today? When are you making chicken noodle soup again, she said.
Schmidt has lived in Hermiston for four years after living in Jerome, Idaho, and working as a nursing home administrator for 15 years. Schmidt worked as an assistant manager at Walmart for the past two years, but after leaving Walmart she decided to go ahead with opening a deli.
When I was at Walmart I was the assistant manager of the deli, so I already knew all the rules and regulations, Schmidt said. Ive always cooked, its just a big part of what Ive always done. Im feeling pretty welcome in Hermiston.
Aside from the restaurant, The Lunch Lady delivers, has a lunch van that goes to local businesses and caters events 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The shop also has a coffee bar.
