Faced with a projected shortfall of $163,000 only one month ago, the Ukiah School Board adopted a budget on June 4 that retains all current staff, including six teachers.
The shortfall was made up by a larger state funding projection, voluntary staff cuts in benefits, supplies and textbooks, and the loss through attrition of one part-time clerical position.
The 2009-2010 budget is set at $913,953, with an unchanged tax rate of $4.8146 per $1,000. Student enrollment is projected at 47.
The school plans to operate both a girls' and a boys' dormitory next year for out-of-area and international students. Mike and Linda Olson have been hired to supervise the boys dorm. The school is looking for weekend help at the dormitories. The Walmart distribution center in Hermiston has donated six pallets of assorted supplies for use in the dormitories.
The board considered raising the student activity fee from $150 to $200 and discussed charging placement fees to international student programs.
The board heard about plans for the all-school reunion to be held summer 2010. The one-day event, held every five years, brings in hundreds of graduates.
The next Ukiah School Board meeting will be Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. at the school.
