The number of Athena city councilors is down to three.
At Thursday night's special board meeting, Mayor Chuck Vickery announced the resignation of Ron Reinhart. Reinhart had submitted a one-line letter announcing his resignation. He did not appear at the council meeting.
When asked about his resignation Friday morning, Reinhart declined to comment.
"I have done plenty of commenting to last a lifetime,"?he said, adding people who know him well will know his reasons.
He has been a city councilor since he was elected in 2004.
Last week Kevin Fernalld resigned during the regular city council meeting. He gave a speech for his resignation, citing problems with how the council did business and with the mayor, whom Fernalld said believes he "runs the city." Fernalld attended Thursday's meeting as a citizen.
At both meetings, Vickery declined to comment about the councilor's resignations. He said he thought it was more council business than city business and described the matters as "private."
During Thursday's meeting Vickery did ask City Recorder Dyann Swanson to asking for letters from people looking to fill the two vacant council seats.
The councilors remaining at the table, just enough to make a quorum, are LaVerne Mitchell, Eric Pickard and Carol Speed. Vickery temporarily reassigned their duties to cover those usually taken on by the now-vacant seats.
