A teacher at Heppner High School is under investigation for an alleged incident of inappropriate contact with a student.
Morrow County Sheriff Ken Matlack said the sheriff's office has been investigating the allegations for a few days now and hopes to wrap up its interviews soon. He added that detectives are questioning several people in the case.
"We'll have a better understanding of what happened by tomorrow morning," he said Thursday afternoon.
The investigation could clear the teacher of any wrongdoing. But, If investigators find direct evidence of criminal behavior, they may arrest the teacher, Matlack said. Evidence of an ambiguous sort will go to the district attorney, who will decide whether to press charges or not.
Matlack said a concerned district patron contacted the school to report the alleged incident.
Superintendent Mark Burrows confirmed the teacher is under investigation and the district has placed the teacher on administrative leave.
