STARKEY - Public access to the Starkey Experimental Forest and Range will end for the season Nov. 15. It will reopen for public access May 1, 2009.

In past years, the area inside the fence was open for an early December cow elk hunt that maintained the herd at a certain number of animals, but Starkey Project Area Manager Brian Dick said the area no longer needs the cow hunt.

The winter closure will allow researchers to trap deer and elk for research and feed ground operation without animal stress from vehicle traffic and human presence.

For more information about the Starkey project, call Dick at 962-6539 or go online to www.fs.fed.us/pnw/ex forests/starkey/index.shtml.
