JOHN DAY - A transformer blew at the West John Day power substation, knocking out electricity to the John Day area Jan. 4. Also, a separate transformer incident knocked out power to some residents in the Long Creek and Ritter areas.

The John Day Fire Department, the John Day Police Department and Grant County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Crews found debris on fire on the ground at the east end of the station.

Power was restored to central John Day less than an hour later and crews with Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative worked to restore power in outlying areas.

Additionally, a tree fell across a roadway near the junction of Highway 395 and Miller Mountain Road, about five miles south of Canyon City. The incidents occurred as gusty winds moved into the region Friday.
