PENDLETON — Maxine Tangney is this year’s Tenderfoot of the Year.

The Main Street Cowboys have given out the award since 1963 to non-members for volunteer spirit in the community. The club chose Tangney from a list that looked like the Who’s Who of the Pendleton area, said club historian Larry Koehne. Tuesday night at the group’s appreciation dinner, Tangney reacted with shock when her name was called.

“It was a total surprise,” she said. “I didn’t expect a thing.”

Main Street Cowboy Kirt Skinner described Tangney as an even-tempered volunteer who is generous with her time.

“She’s one of those who is always there,” Skinner said. “If you need a volunteer, she’ll be the first in line.”
