HERMISTON - A 3-year-old boy sustained a leg injury last week when his father allegedly crashed his car and attempted to elude police on foot while carrying the child.
Police allege Umatilla resident Jose Luis Pineda Barreto, 30, was driving under the influence of alcohol when he left his wife's residence in Hermiston with his son last Wednesday. He is also accused of assaulting his wife in front of their children.
Lt. Greg Anderson said the injuries to the child were minor and were sustained when Barreto crashed his car near West Ridgeway and North First Place.
After police began chasing Barreto, he left the child unattended. Police located the child and placed him in protective custody until his mother was summoned to the scene, police said. A pipe used to smoke methamphetamine was allegedly discovered in Barreto's car.
Barreto was found a short time later hiding under a fuel truck behind Heller and Sons gas station at 615 N. First St., police said.
He was taken into custody and cited for third- and fourth-degree assault, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of intoxicants, felony hit and run, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia.
