Trial set for teacher in sex case

Kevin Nice

The Pilot Rock teacher facing charges of sex crimes against four students now has a trial date.

Kevin Nice, 37, taught for 12 years at the Pilot Rock High School, where he also was the head baseball coach and offensive coordinator for the school's football team. State prosecutors have charged Nice with 35 counts of sex crimes, including seven felonies under Measure 11, Oregon's mandatory minimum sentencing law. Convictions for those alone pack a 46-year prison sentence.

Nice has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During a brief court proceeding Thursday morning, Circuit Court Judge Christopher Brauer set Nov. 15-19 as trial dates in the case. Brauer also gave attorneys for the defense and the state two weeks to reach any plea deal in the case.

Nice remains in the Umatilla County Jail in Pendleton in lieu of a $1 million bail.
