ASTORIA - The Coast Guard says two crew members who abandoned their 60-foot fishing vessel after it caught fire off Long Beach, Wash., have been rescued safely.
The crew members reported the fire aboard the Portlock late Monday afternoon before jumping into a life raft. The vessel was then about 10 miles off the southwest Washington coast.
A nearby Coast Guard cutter, a helicopter from Astoria and a motor lifeboat from Station Cape Disappointment all responded. The two men were brought back to Cape Disappointment.
The captain of the Port of Portland decided the best option was to sink the vessel before it drifted to shore. The crew of the Cutter Active was told to sink the Portlock, then eight miles offshore.
