Yesterday at 10:30 a.m. a Wallowa-Whitman National Forest employee Steven Uptegrove was accidentally killed, according to the forest's office of public affairs.

Uptegrove, 52, was struck by a falling snag while assisting the Baker County Narcotics Enforcement Team with the eradication of an illegal marijuana garden on the forest. The incident occured south of Unity near the West Fork of Bull Run Creek.

Uptegrove had worked for over 30 years in the fire program and had worked as station lead and foreman in Unity since 2006. The victim is survived by his wife Hope, a Baker County resident.

Wallowa-Whitman National Forest public affairs said the incident is under investigation my federal, state and local authorities.
