HERMISTON — Larry Usher will replace Sandstone Middle School principal Neely Kirwan next year.

Hermiston School District Superintendent Fred Maiocco announced Tuesday that he will recommend Usher to the school board after interviews and a public open house last week with three finalists. The other two candidates were from outside the district.

Kirwan is leaving for a district-level position at Hood River School District. Usher served as her assistant principal this year and was dean of students at Sandstone for three and a half years before that. He originally began working for Hermiston School District in 2002 as a high school social studies teacher and coached the boys’ varsity basketball team.

In a statement, Usher said he is “delighted and humbled” to be chosen for the job.

“Ms. Kirwan’s departure leaves big shoes for me to fill, but I look forward to the opportunity and challenge,” he said.
