Dean was born to Dr. Hugh and Helen (Raymond of Helix) McKenzie in Pendleton, Ore., where he was raised and attended schools, graduating from Pendleton High School in 1948. As a youth, he spent his summers at Lehman Hot Springs, and loved to draw, especially cartoons.
He went on to graduate from San Jose State and the University of Fine Arts in New York City with a Ph.D. in art history. He became a professor of art history at the University of Oregon, Eugene, for 25 years. As an avid traveler, he often went to Europe to photograph great works of art for his classes.
He is survived by his wife Lucille in Eugene; his brothers (Dr.) Robert in Pendleton and (Dr.) Kenneth in Watsonville, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
