Della Jean Foster went to be with her Heavenly Father on Jan. 2, 2012. Her children were by her side at her home in Arlington, Ore., under the care of Pioneer Memorial Hospice. 

She was the oldest child of Ernest Beryl Marshall and Avys May Haynes, born in St. Maries, Idaho. Della went to school at Wolf Lodge, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, for first grade, Weippe, Idaho, for 2nd grade. Third grade was in Pierce, Idaho, and Clarkia, Idaho, for 4th grade. The family moved to wherever father “Barney” could get work. She went to high school in Pierce, Idaho, and afterwards went to work in Lewiston, Idaho, for Lewiston Tent & Awning owned by Henry and Pearl Foster, sewing tarps and latrines for the military.

Della met and married Harvey Louis Foster on November 25, 1945, in Lewiston, Idaho, after he was discharged from the Navy. Harvey and Della lived in Enterprise and Joseph, Ore., where Della raised a garden, canned fruit and vegetables filled the pantry white raising her kids. She was community oriented, volunteering for Red Cross, Cub Scouts, PTA, and United Methodist Women’s church group. Della worked in later years as a cook at the Wallowa Lake Lodge for two summers, and then went to work at Enterprise Memorial Hospital for 6.5 years in the business office. In 1976 moved to Pendleton, Ore., living on the Hill Ranch where Harvey worked. Della worked for Morrison, Witherall & Fife, CPAs, for 17 years. She took classes at Blue Mt. Community College to further her accounting education.

In 1993, Harvey and Della retired, moving to Arlington, Ore. Della volunteered for Seniors, was president of United Methodist Women’s church group of Arlington, on the board for the Arlington Cable, and president and secretary for the Oregon State Extension Service for Gillian County. She knitted, crocheted, embroidered, and sewed during her many years of life.

She is survived by six children, Douglas (wife Mary, sons, Brian and Alan) of The Dalles, Ore., Michael (wife Jeannie, son Curtis and daughter Angie) of Dallesport, Wash., Jeri K. Foster-Horrocks (sons Jared and Christopher) of Dallesport and Vancouver, Wash., Jeannie Alford (husband John, daughters Jodi, Jennifer, Janet, and Johna) of Joseph, Ore., Brian of Arlington, Ore., David (wife Leona, son Eric) of Arlington, Ore. She is also survived by Dale Marshall and family, of Clarkston, Wash., and 16 great-grandchildren, Bradley, Kevin, Christopher, Grace, Kaylea, Kendra, Caden, Emerson, Claire, Mathew, Caylynn, Piper, Jesse, Madison, Nethan, and Jake. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey, her sisters Kathryn and Marimargaret, her brothers, Gerald, Dallas, Robert, and Neal.

Viewing will be held Friday, January 6, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

Services will be held at Arlington Methodist Church, Arlington, Ore., on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at 11 a.m., with internment at Arlington Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Arlington Methodist Church or charity of choice.
