Donald Mitchell Briscoe passed away at his home in Hermiston, Oregon, on Wednesday, May 28th, 2014, at the age of 88. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend whose favorite places were a goose blind, a fishing hole, a bleacher seat at a high school sporting event or family gatherings. Our family, friends and America lost another of our Greatest Generation men.
Don was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on May 1, 1926, to Frank Briscoe and Lois Barrett-Briscoe. He attended South Beloit High School and excelled in athletics and charming the ladies. Upon graduation in 1944, Don joined the Marines, and on February 19th, 1945, as a member of the 27th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division, stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima. After Don earned the Purple Heart he returned to duty in the South Pacific for another year.
He received an honorable discharge in March 1946 and became an apprentice machinist in South Beloit. Moving to Seattle in 1952, he became a mechanical engineer with Boeing. In Seattle Don met his lifelong love and wife of 56 years, Carol Parker Briscoe, raising four very busy kids. Don was laid off from Boeing in 1971, and the family moved to Forest Grove, Oregon, where he was a mechanical engineering manager for Esco Corp. for 10 years, then worked as an engineer for Tektronix, Inc. He was an orchardist/gardener and die-hard sports fan of Forest Grove High School athletics. Moving to Hermiston, Oregon in 1996, Don and Carol were ardent fans of the Hermiston Bulldogs. He was a volunteer care van driver and auxiliary member of the Good Shepherd Medical Center Auxiliary. He had been commander of the American Legion Post 288 in South Beloit, Illinois, and an active member of the Elks in Forest Grove, Oregon.
Don is survived by his wife Carol, and children Dan Briscoe (Polly), Hermiston, Linda Briscoe Turner, Yokosuka Japan, David Briscoe (Kim), Basalt, Colorado, Clay Briscoe (Debbie) Echo, Oregon, and Terry Briscoe (from a previous marriage), plus 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Marshall Briscoe, and his beloved loyal golden retriever, Joe.

A life celebration and military honors are scheduled for Saturday, August 9th, 2014.
