Herman (Slim) Wenke passed away on July 19, 2012, at the age of 94, at the McKillop Assisted Living Facility in Sublimity, Ore.
Herman was born on March 11, 1918, in Bloomfield, Neb., to Herman J. and Louis (Lange) Wenke. He spent his early years helping on the family farm, along with his three sisters and five brothers. He attended a one-room school house, acquired his high school diploma and then completed one year of college in Hastings, Neb. He then returned home to help his older brother manage the family farm.
On October 23, 1947, he married Cleo (McFarland) Prominski and became a father to son and daughter Ron and Pam Prominski. He moved his new family to Redmond, Ore., in 1948. The family expanded with the births of another daughter, Kandace, and son Craig.
In Oregon, Herman began a new career as a heavy equipment mechanic. He continued as a mechanic for 36 years. At the time of his retirement, he was employed by Henkels and McCoy. During his years with Henkels, he spent time working in the Pendleton area.
Herman enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors camping, hunting, fishing, crabbing and clamming. He especially enjoyed the family gatherings at Succor Creek for chukar hunting. He also liked to attend the semi-annual Wenke reunions to visit and play cards. Most of all, he loved to be around his family and holding the new baby family members.
During his later retirement years, Herman completed many woodworking projects and took great pride in his vegetable garden and his lovely flower beds.
Herman will be missed by all, but most of all by his wife of 64 years, Cleo, and by his children: Ron (and June) Prominski, Pam (and Bill) Haines, Kandace (and Tom) Bostwick, and Craig (and Michelle) Wenke. Also missing their Papa are his 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. There are also many nieces and nephews who will be missing their Uncle Hermie. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.
