Marcia E. Spurlock, a longtime resident of Pendleton, died Sunday, November 6, 2011, in a Pendleton care facility. She was 62 years old.

Mrs. Spurlock was born January 26, 1949, in Pendleton. She was the daughter of Mehl and Dora (Swauger) Spurlock. She was raised and educated in Pendleton and Pilot Rock, and graduated form Pilot Rock High School with the class of 1967. After her schooling, she married Roy Sloan. Two children were born to that marriage, and it later ended.
She had worked as a homemaker and for Smith Foods before she began working as a dietitian for St. Anthony Hospital in 1977. She continued working at St. Anthony until she became disabled in 1985.
She greatly enjoyed the outdoors. She loved to spend her time gardening, or taking trips to the mountains. She also enjoyed watching football and other sports, and she was always fond of and kind to animals.
She is survived by two children: Greg Sloan of Pendleton and Michelle Logan of Middleton, Idaho, a brother, Curt LaVelle of Pendleton, a sister, Roberta Lovell of La Grande, Ore., three grandchildren: Ashley Amaya, Jessica Amaya and Dustin Sloan, and one great-grandchild, Akiaha Amaya. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Mike LaVelle, and three sisters, Sharon Church, Darlene Netz and Joan Nelson.
