Margaret Winter
Pendleton 1921-2015


Margaret Winter died Wednesday, April 22, 2015; she was 93. She was born in 1921 in Pendleton, Oregon, to George Wachtel and Winnie Chisholm Wachtel. She attended Pendleton High School and the University of Oregon. In 1943 she married Mel Winter who, at the time, was stationed in Pendleton as part of the Army Air Corps.

Margaret, who was known to her family as Maggie Mae, loved music and history all her life and seemed to never tire of participating in the arts. She loved to travel and was especially fond of professional opera wherever she could attend, in the U.S. as well as Europe. She imparted an appreciation of the arts to all her children.

Maggie Mae had many interests including jewelry making, working with precious metals as well as natural gems and stones. She was a diligent student of art and creating art, and an avid reader of literature and history. She loved snow skiing and made sure all her kids learned too. In 1960 her husband Mel was elected mayor of Pendleton, and for many years Maggie Mae served in the League of Women Voters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Ellen Turner of Eugene, Ore. She is survived by her five children, Richard Winter (and Sandy) Tigard, Ore.; Phil Winter (and Boone) Pendleton; Quade Winter, Pendleton; George Winter (and Ruth) San Jose, Calif.; and Liz Nase, Portland, Ore., with eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
