MILTON-FREEWATER Martha Hetterley, 83, of Milton-Freewater died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the Milton-Freewater Health and Rehabilitation Center. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m. at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. A reception and celebration of life will follow at the Milton-Freewater Elks Lodge.
Mrs. Hetterley was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Tolstoy, S.D., to John and Lydia (Lout) Wolff. She attended area schools and graduated from McLaughlin High School in South Dakota.
A few years after graduation, she met and married Jake Francis Hetterley. Together the couple farmed and moved to North Dakota before finally settling in Milton-Freewater in 1962.
She worked for the Umatilla Cannery, Birds Eye Frozen Foods and, for 15 years, worked at the Walla Walla VA Hospital until her retirement.
Survivors include her sons Robert Hetterley of College Place, Wash., Larry Hetterley of Milton-Freewater, Duane Hetterley of Athena and Roland Hetterley of Haines; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jake Hetterley; three brothers and a sister; three infant grandsons; and her companion of 18 years, Bob Hillard.
