Kathryn, the only daughter of parents Claus and Selma (Kieper) Hesse, was born in Cole Camp, Missouri on September 19, 1921. One can only imagine the teasing she must have endured from her three brothers Clarence, Eldor and Robert. Her childhood memories centered around her dads farm and nearby 8-grade church school, which she attended.
Following her high school experience, Kathryn enrolled in beauty college in Kansas City, Missouri. She was self-employed as a beautician much of her adult life. Melvin Kiefer stole her heart on January 6, 1943, when they began their forty-two years of marriage before his untimely death.
Melvin, Kathryn and their children, Thomas C. Kiefer and Judy Kay, arrived in Hermiston from Great Bend, Kan., in 1965. Melvin was transferred to Hermiston, Ore., to establish, open and manage the new manufacturing plant for Marlette Homes.
Four grandchildren and another four great-grandchildren joined the family, much to Kathryns delight. Kathryns smile widened every time the grandchildren came to visit. Grandchildren: Robin (Kiefer) McLaren, Kevin Kiefer, Melvin Hall and Kurt Hall. Great-grandchildren: Courtney and Trent Kiefer and Kathryn and Dennis Hall.
Kathryns interests ranged from golf, sewing, quilting, reading and helping with the Umatilla County Fair for the Bethlehem Lutheran Preschool. Kathryns gentle spirit, kindness to others, and thoughtfulness endeared her to all of her family. Condolences may be sent to www.pioneerchapel.com.
