He returned to college to pursue a degree in dentistry. He obtained a bachelors degree from Portland State University and pursed a doctorate in dentistry from Oregon Health & Science University, graduating with honors and awards in 1991. He opened his first dental practice in Alaska. He also joined the Soldotna Fire Department as a volunteer EMT and firefighter.
In 2000 he temporarily relocated his family to Battleground, Wash., while searching for his next practice setting. In 2001 the Cummings family moved to Enterprise, where he opened Wallowa Valley Dental Care; he practiced there until his death. He also purchased a farm several years ago in the Enterprise area. Immediately prior to his death he was working to relocate to Walla Walla to be closer to more of his family and to return to his roots.
