THE DALLES - Jackson Lester Boyer, 84, of The Dalles died Monday, April 12, 2010, at The Dalles from complications of lung cancer, surrounded by his loved ones. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 23 at the Condon Cemetery, followed by a gathering and meal for all family and friends at the Condon Elks Lodge. A meal will be provided and potluck dessert contributions are welcome.
Mr. ?Boyer was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Condon to James Garfield and Annie Harder Whyte Boyer, the second to last of eleven brothers and sisters. He attended Pine Ridge Elementary School and graduated from Condon High School. In 1944 he entered the Army and served in the 774th Tank Battalion during World War II. He landed in France in 1944 after the D-Day invasion, and was wounded crossing the Rhine River in southern Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
In 1949 he married Katheryn Lou Burns; the couple had two children. In 1979 he married Dorothy Bettencourt Nicholson. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1983. The couple lived in Kennewick, Wash., for many years before resettling in The Dalles.
Mr. Boyer is survived by his wife Dorothy of The Dalles; sister Alice Vance of Hermiston; children Debra Boyer of Seattle and Dan Boyer of Condon; stepchildren Bruce Nicholson of La Grande, Delbert Nicholson of The Dalles, Kathy Russell of Phoenix and Kurt Nicholson of Medford; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nine siblings preceded him in death.
