Ray Clayton Ayers Sr., 90, of Pendleton died at home on May 21, 2014. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 28, 2014, at the Pendleton Nazarene Church with Pastor Chris Clemons officiating.
Mr. Ayers was born July 15, 1923, in Heppner, Oregon, to Clayton and Bertha (Ritchie) Ayers. He attended school in Heppner where he lived most of his life.
On December 28, 1941, he married Maxine Pettyjohn in Heppner. She preceded him in death in 1972. On January 26, 1973, he married Kerry (Kay) Kelly at which time he moved to Pendleton.
He and Matt Hughes were co-owners of M & R Floor Covering and Heating in Heppner. He later owned and operated Rays Heating & Refrigeration, Inc. in Pendleton. He loved to make unique clocks and was an avid numismatic. There wasnt anything Ray couldnt fix. In his early years, he worked at ranching and loved to fish. He was also a faithful volunteer at the Salvation Army meal site for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Ayers of Pendleton; daughter Roseann Tetrick and companion Augustine Turrisi of Pendleton; son Rodney and Cheryl Ayers of Lynchburg, Va.; daughter Rae Cathleen Ayers of Pendleton; son Ray Jr. and Brenda Ayers of Tigard; sister Juanita Widmer of Gresham; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maxine, and grandson Drew McClintock.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Anthony Hospice or The Church of the Nazarene in Pendleton in care of Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, 131 S.E. Byers Ave., Pendleton, OR 97801.
