TROUTDALE Tad Lee Neilson, 83, of Troutdale died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, in Troutdale. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham. Service with military honors will be follow at 1:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery.
Mr. Neilson was born on Oct. 12, 1927, in Farmington, N.M., to Ruben and Harriet (Hancock) Neilson. He grew up in Pendleton and attended Pendleton High School. He later attended college at Eastern Oregon Normal College.
In 1945 he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He reenlisted in 1950 and served in the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service in the Chosin Reservoir.
In 1948 he married Phyllis Sherwood in La Grande, and they had three children. They moved to Gresham in 1968 and were later divorced. In 1978 he married Evelyn Brown in Reno, Nev., and added three children to his family. He moved to Troutdale in 1999.
He worked as a police officer in Pendleton for a while. After moving to Gresham, he worked as a machinist for Owens Brockway in Portland. He retired in 1990.
Mr. Neilson is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Troutdale; children Candace Mann of Gresham, Rick Blanton of California, Fred Neilson and Bill Neilson, both of La Grande, Debi Anderson of Portland, and Karon Brunton of Troutdale; brothers Larry Neilson of Eugene and Keith Neilson of Arizona; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren with two on the way.
His brothers Otis and Neal both preceded him in death.
