Something is backward here. Pendleton has a fine downtown and has a great opportunity to build on this strength. As new residents in this city, my wife and I thoroughly enjoy the convenience of walking from our house on Despain Avenue to downtown and all that is offered there.

George Murdock's letter to Open Forum April 9 was right on the mark. What Pendleton has to offer as a shopping/business area is not just convenience, but also ambiance. The more one can allow and encourage shoppers to linger in the area the more likely they will make purchases in all area businesses, not just those with the outdoor cafe seating in front of them.

The parking spaces that would be lost on Main Street to the outdoor cafe seating are readily available right across Main Street from the Chamber of Commerce and on Southeast First Street.

Pendleton has an historic business district, the Heritage Station Museum, the Underground tours, the River Parkway. All these things bring people downtown. Let's encourage people to linger and enjoy more of what is offered.
