I was sitting at a stoplight in Victorville, Calif., a few days ago and saw a pickup with a memorial on the back window. It read: "In memory of Jeffrey Roberson, Nov. 28, 2006, killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom so we may live free." I was suddenly overcome with emotion.

I quickly jotted down his name so I could locate information on the Internet and find out who this stranger was who died serving our country (Irrigon mother's son dies in Afghanistan, EO, Dec. 9, 2006). Turns out Jeffrey graduated from Barstow High School in 2002 and lived in Phelan, Calif. He was 22. Web sites say he died in Logar, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.

I did not know Jeffrey, but hope his family sees this and knows someone thought of him today, and thanks him for giving his life for this country.
