I am writing in support of the Pendleton School District local option levy (measure 30-105).
The levy will provide significant operating funds, which can be used for teacher salaries, academic programs, and updating technology in the classroom. It is a continuation of the current levy for 5 years.
Most importantly, the levy will not lead to a tax rate increase and will remain at the rate of not more than $0.40 per $1000 assessed value.
Some of you may be wondering why we are voting for another education tax when a school bond was passed in November, 2013. It is important to understand that the November, 2013 bond was a facilities bond for the construction of new schools. None of that money can be used for operations. On the other hand, this local option levy is for operating the schools. The bond and this local option levy work collaboratively to provide a quality education for our children.
The passing of this levy is critical to providing our students with a quality education. If we have to cut teachers, class sizes will increase. If we have to cut academic programs, our students will lose out on the opportunity to diversify and enhance their education.
Voting “yes” on measure 30-105 is an investment in our students, our teachers, our schools, and our future. Even if you do not have children in the school district, the quality of the education we provide to our students is related to the quality of our community.
As a resident of this great Pendleton community we have a responsibility to provide a quality education for our children.
