I was pleasantly surprised to read in the "Dear Abby" column of Aug. 7 a letter where a writer thanked the U.S. Postal Service for delivering many letters to him with only his name, city and state on the envelope. This is in stark contrast to the service being provided to many small communities in the Northwest.
When my husband and I returned to our home after he entertained at the Irrigon Watermelon Festival, we inadvertently packed two of the festival's microphones with our equipment. We were contacted in just a few days and told the microphones were needed for a "Music in the Parks" concert.
We immediately took the microphones to our post office, used priority insured mail and sent them to Al and LaVelle Partlow in Irrigon. Unbeknown to us, they had changed from their post office box to a physical address, and although the Irrigon Post Office knew where they received mail, they returned the package to us.
More distressing to me than the exorbitant postage I paid is the deterioration of postal service in our small communities. What makes it especially sad in Irrigon is that the three preceding postmasters would go out of their way to provide a high quality of service to the residents there. I might add that UPS will also go out of its way to locate an addressee in order to deliver a parcel.
I do not know what the answer is, but after reading the "Dear Abby" letter, it heartens me to know that some postmasters are still going the extra mile to provide service beyond the call of duty.
