July 14, 1907

The earnest solicitation of the Pendleton friends will be successful and H.E. Bickers of the firm of Livermore and Bickers and clerk of the Pendleton school district will be named as superintendent of the Oregon reform school next Monday by Governor Chamberlain. While he regrets to leave Pendleton, yet Mr. Bickers said to the East Oregonian today that he would probably take this position. He is especially fitted for the work and while superintendent of the reform school before made an enviable record as manager of unruly boys. Mrs. Bickers is also especially fitted for the work and enjoys it and is desirous of becoming matron for the outcasts in this institution again.

A House Interior subcommittee approved Monday a senate-passed bill expressing congressional recognition of a national cowboy hall of fame and museum as a memorial to the Western pioneers. A neighborhood get-acquainted party and potluck was held on the lawn of the Earl Huson home Wednesday evening honoring Mr. and Mrs. William Snyder who recently moved to the Correll addition. Mr. Snyder is the new minister of the Community Presbyterian church in Umatilla.

When oilmen poke beneath the crust of Eastern Oregon, what do they expect to find? Two factors are paramount when it comes to deciding if oil and gas drilling will take place. One is how formidable a barrier the geology presents. The other rests on how much money oil companies budget for exploration. Considering geology alone, the underlying structure of the Columbia Plateau is enough to scare away all but the most wealthy or ambitious prospectors. Despite drilling by Shell Oil Co., the Columbia Plateau remains one of the nation's least known regions. And the companies that are exploring here aren't sharing their information.
